Fiorentina’s Serie A game with Atalanta was postponed on Sunday after chief executive Joe Barone was taken ill earlier in the afternoon.

The two teams were scheduled to meet at Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo at 6pm local time.

However, the 57-year-old was taken ill at the team hotel in the hours leading up to the fixture.

He was subsequently taken to a local hospital in Milan before the league later confirmed the cancellation.

A Serie A statement read: “The Atalanta vs Fiorentina match, scheduled for today 17 March 2024 at 18:00 CET, has been postponed to a later date.”

A statement from Fiorentina added: “ACF Fiorentina can confirm that Joe Barone is currently hospitalised at the cardiac intensive care unit at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan directed by Professor Alberto Zangrillo.

“His condition remains critical but stable. Barone is currently receiving the most advanced treatment in cardiac function and support. Another update will be published tomorrow.”

Barone is a key part of the club’s leadership team and has been in position alongside Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso since the Italian-born American billionaire purchased the club in 2019.

Fiorentina are currently eighth in the Serie A table with Atalanta four points above them in sixth.

It remains to be confirmed when the fixture will be rearranged.
