Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus never attended North-West University (NWU) - he was a product of the University of the Free State instead - but the hero's welcome he received in Potchefstroom on Thursday had all the elements of a glorious homecoming.

Erasmus was at the institution, where hundreds of students and fans filled its grounds, to receive an honorary doctorate for his contribution to coaching science.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, currently injured and sidelined from duty with French club Racing 92, was also a surprise guest at the ceremony.
