New Zealand prop Tyrel Lomax looked devastated after he suffered a horrific injury just days before the start of the Rugby World Cup.

The 27-year-old went down clutching his knee after making a tackle less than 15 minutes into his side's clash with South Africa and left the Twickenham pitch on a medical cart.

Lomax, who was named in Ian Foster's World Cup squad earlier this month, looked concerned as he was treated by medics, with the tournament in France now just days away.

And video replays showed the gruesome extent of the injury, with a huge gash visible on the prop's leg just seconds after he emerged from the tackle.

As the game was briefly paused, he was fitted with a huge red leg brace and helped onto the cart by medics before making way for Fletcher Newell.

Lomax now faces a nervous wait to discover if his injury is bad enough to rule him out of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Foster was left sweating just quarter of an hour later as another of his props, Ethan de Groot, went down injured. However, the Highlanders star got back onto this feet after being taped up by medics.
