More rain and wet snow through Tuesday before finally drying out

26 Mar 2024

Other than some drizzle, much of the area will be free from steady rainfall this evening, but areas of rain, some of which may be heavy, will return by around midnight and continue into early Tuesday morning. Low pressure will gradually move across Iowa and into Wisconsin during this time. Milder air will also lift northward, and we look to see temperatures inch up at least a few more degrees through the night, pushing some places into the 40s. This milder air will start off our Tuesday, but it won’t stay for long as colder air wraps around the backside of the low while lifting northward. We will cool through the 30s and even below freezing by mid-afternoon. This will support a transition back to some snow, which may continue into the early evening before ending. Additional rainfall from this system will be in the 0.50-1.00″ range, while mostly minor accumulations of snow are expected, generally around an inch or so, though a few inches are possible near the Minnesota state line. The colder air will allow whatever additional snow and the remaining slush to freeze solid as temperatures drop down into the teens overnight.

A ridge of high pressure to the west will then take over, allowing us to dry out at least for a few days before any potential return of wet weather. Clouds will mix with some sunshine on Wednesday, but northwest flow will dominate and it will feel like winter with highs only reaching close to freezing. We should then see a clearing sky and another cold start into Thursday morning with more teens and even some single digits to the north. The high center will cover the Southern Plains and Midwest, shifting winds to the west and southwest. Thursday will bring our best chance to see abundant sunshine this week, but it will remain chilly with highs staying mostly in the 30s. Thereafter, we will at least warm back to around average for late March, but clouds will also return as the next warm front develops to our south. Friday should remain dry with highs climbing into the mid and upper 40s. A wave of low pressure is forecast to pass by to our south into Friday night, possibly with scattered precipitation, but as it moves away into Saturday, rain chances will diminish. A few additional pieces of energy may ride along the same front to our south, keeping low end chances of showers around into early next week, but we look to be on the northern fringes so it may end up staying mainly dry with highs in the 40s.
