Arsenal fans discussion: 'We need to win this'

Arsenal fans have been having their say in The Athletic's discussion tab at the top of the page and clickable here.

Nicolas R says: Big big game today, we need to win this to keep third secure. I don’t see us challenging for the title but I don't want the spuds feeling like they are on our level. I hope... the referee keeps an eye on the Saka fouling that Liverpool like to do.

Leke A adds: I would actually like to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool. It's been a long time since that happened.

And another user posted: Need to replace Partey and Jesus this summer. Neither can be relied on when it matters.

Szoboszlai out due to hamstring issue

The absence of Dominik Szoboszlai is a real blow for Liverpool today. The Hungary captain felt discomfort in his hamstring following the midweek win over Chelsea and will undergo further assessment. He's only recently returned to action from a similar problem. Ryan Gravenberch is tasked with filling the void in midfield.

As expected, Conor Bradley isn't in the squad following the death of his father Joe on Saturday with Trent Alexander-Arnold returning at right-back. The third change from midweek sees Darwin Nunez, who was a fitness doubt, drop to the bench with Cody Gakpo starting up front.

Jorginho can help control game

Getty Images

Jorginho starting seems like a smart move in Arsenal’s attempt to control the game. He hasn’t started much recently as Declan Rice has played the No 6 role but he controls the pace of play really well and in big games that emotional control can be vital.

The worry is whether he provides the same cover in transition, but Arsenal’s counter-pressing has been a major strength this season, so the aim will be to pin Liverpool in.

Jesus out for Arsenal, again

No Gabriel Jesus for Arsenal is a big blow, and one that is becoming frustratingly common. The Brazilian isn’t fit enough to make the squad despite Arteta saying confirming on Friday that he had trained this week.

It’s another disruption in what has been a stop-start 18 months for him. Whenever he seems to be getting back to top sharpness, another injury comes along to break the momentum. Zinchenko, Partey and Tomiyasu are other players who Arsenal haven’t been able to rely upon consistently enough the last two seasons. That does have an effect.

In Kai Havertz, though, Arsenal have a different striking option. He offers a direct option against Van Dijk and Konate who did well against Jesus at Anfield, being really physical whenever the ball was played into his feet. He gives them a target to aim for at crosses, but they lose Jesus’ zip and his dribbling ability which is so crucial to changing the pace of attacks.

Three changes for Liverpool

Liverpool make three changes to the starting line-up they used in Wednesday's win over Chelsea.

Arsenal fans won't need reminding about Liverpool forward Diogo Jota's dazzling record at the Emirates Stadium.

He has played there five times since joining Liverpool in 2020; scoring five goals and putting on two assists.

That record is even more impressive considering he has played just 287 minutes in those games, meaning he has provided a goal contributions every 41 minutes.

But, there's one problem. He has been playing in Alexander-Arnold's position at right-back and the England defender is ready to return.
