Ready for round two: Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez in Red, White & Royal Blue

Amazon Prime

The special relationship is about to get a whole lot steamier … again. Transatlantic romp Red, White & Royal Blue is coming back for seconds, director Matthew López announced at a special LA screening – and, worry not, co-stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will be returning.

‘Yes, there’s going to be a sequel to the movie,’ the director confirmed to rapturous applause during a Q&A at the Culiver Theatre alongside the cast and crew. Casey McQuiston, who wrote the bestselling book behind the first smash-hit movie, confirmed they would be collaborating on the script: ‘Matthew and I are writing it together – that's all we can say,’ they told the crowd.

Red, White & Royal Blue was every inch a viral sensation when it hit streaming services last August. The romantic comedy tracks the enemies-to-lovers trajectory of Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), whose mother happens to be president of the United States (and also happens to be played by Uma Thurman), and Prince Henry of Great Britain (Galitzine). What begins as a forced PR friendship ends with a blossoming romance – via, of course, ‘diplomatic discussions’ in varying states of undress and in locations ranging from Polo tournaments to the White House. You’ll never look at the Washington Monument the same.

It is still unknown whether the rest of the cast, including Thurman and Stephen Fry, who plays King James III of Britain, will return for the upcoming sequel, but if the success of the first film is anything to go by, the creators will have another blockbuster on their hands. The movie rocketed to the top of Amazon’s streaming charts upon release and went viral on social media, racking up millions of views on BookTok and mammoth amounts of X searches.

It was also a turning point in the careers of both its stars. Galitzine, who attended the Met Gala this week, played yet another swordfighting royal as the consort of King James I in Oliver Hermanus’ spicy period drama Mary & George. Starring alongside Julianne Moore, the actor is making his name for performing with Hollywood’s most talented actresses – his recent release, The Idea of You, sees him playing a Harry Styles-esque popstar who falls in love with a fan’s mother, played by none other than Anne Hathaway. Meanwhile Perez, now a regular on the front rows of Givenchy and Prada, was recently appointed ambassador for the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony.

When the two spoke to Tatler before the release of Red, White & Royal Blue last year, they spoke of their love for the film’s inclusive message.

‘It just felt like a beautiful story,’ said Galitzine, ‘someone who’s largely pretended to be someone else their whole life, and then this other person completely obliterates their world-view.’

They also opened up about filming the movie’s many (many) sex scenes, with Zakhar Perez joking how ‘there’s so much choreography to sex…ual scenes.’

‘It’s a crazy thing to be intimate that way with your friend,’ said Galitzine at the time. ‘And we want people to fall in love with these characters, because their love has to be real.’

If the ecstatic fan response to the sequel announcement is any barometer, they certainly succeeded. Outside the release of a promo poster, developer Amazon MGM is playing coy, keeping all details about the plot, cast, and distribution firmly under wraps. As for title ideas, could they do worse than Red, White & Royal 2?
