Ward 19 councillor George Henderson says it began raining late on Sunday evening.

The heavy downpour then increased in intensity, leaving parts of the popular coastal town underwater.

Henderson, who also serves the communities of Uvongo, St Micheals, and Manaba, says Margate was also left without power after its transformer was struck by lightning.

It's since been restored:

"With a lot of damage and a lot of rain, we had damage to the road construction.

“The intersection of the Sasol Garage is a no-go area for traffic; the whole area is washed away, and the roads are damaged. There is also infrastructure damage to the sewage pump station in Margate."

The SA Weather Service's Thandiwe Gumede says they have issued two warnings for disruptive rain and localised flooding for the province's south-eastern parts today:

"We're expecting an 80% chance over the southeast, and for the remainder of the province, it's mainly a 60% chance. Those areas where we have an 80% chance will include Margate, Port Edward, and Port Shepstone. We will proceed northwards, including areas Scottburgh. We will come inland into areas like Umkomaas, Harding, and also some parts of Durban for today."
