Several residents have been evacuated after their homes in Margate, along KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast, were destroyed and infrastructural damage was caused by heavy rain, thunderstorms and flooding on Sunday.
Ugu District Municipality spokesperson France Zama said five people died, but he was unable to provide details.
He said the mayor, Skhumbuzo Mqadi, led a delegation on Monday during a visit to Margate, the worst-affected region.
