Virgil van Dijk has detailed Liverpool’s determination to hit new heights in the closing stages of what could prove to be an historic season.

With the Carabao Cup already won, the Reds are aiming to add the Europa League and Premier League trophies to the club’s honours list in the final weeks of Jürgen Klopp’s reign.

Their pursuit of top-flight glory continues tonight when Sheffield United visit Anfield and, during his notes for the official matchday programme, captain Van Dijk writes: “We also know that there are areas we need to improve on ourselves.

“Throughout this season we have had quite a bit of praise for the way we have managed to come from behind in games. There is no question that this is a strength and I could not be more pleased that we have this quality and have been able to use it on as many occasions as we have.

“At the same time, though, going behind is not a good thing in itself and it would be much better if we could avoid being in this position. Small margins will be increasingly important in the final stages of the season and this is an area where we can improve so we should definitely look to do so.

“Sometimes it is just about being more clinical and more decisive in our work and the same goes at the other end of the pitch where we are creating a lot of chances and building a lot of pressure, but not always getting as many rewards as we would hope for.

“Anything that we can do to improve these outcomes can only help us so we should definitely be looking to get better in both of these areas and also others.

“This pursuit of excellence is necessary because we know it could make all the difference. It’s not about being overly critical of ourselves or holding ourselves to standards that aren’t achievable, but if we can get an extra one per cent here and there then we will see where it takes us.”
