All About Social Media Trend Chroming: A social media trend called chroming has gone viral and has led to the tragic death of an Australian teenager. According to News.com.au, Esra Haynes suffered a cardiac arrest after inhaling chemicals from an aerosol deodorant can during a sleepover with her friends. The 13-year-old Melbourne teen spent 8 days on life support after suffering a cardiac arrest, following which the family decided to turn off the machines. Her parents have been creating awareness about this recent trend and have also sought a ban on chroming. The trend has been named "Chroming" as it includes the act of sniffing chrome-based paint as a means to get high, according to the National Retail Association.

According to reports, there has been a spike in chroming trend post the pandemic and has become very popular among Gen Z, and is also prevalent in populations that cannot afford or do not have access to other drugs.

What Is Chroming?

The social media trend "Chroming" encourages users to inhale toxic substances as recreational drugs. Toxic chemicals can include aerosol cans, paint, solvent, permanent markers, nail polish remover, hairspray, deodorants, lighter fluid, glue, cleaning products, nitrous oxide or petrol. Consuming these toxic chemicals gives an individual an instant high, though it’s extremely dangerous.

The common side effects of chroming are similar to alcohol intoxication which includes slurred speech, dizziness, hallucinations, euphoria, nausea, vomiting and disorientation. However, these effects are usually short-lived. Chroming can also result in a heart attack, seizures, suffocation, coma, choking or fatal injury and can permanently damage the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.
