Alfie Gilchrist is Chelsea blue through and through, and he tells us his full back story in the programme for tonight’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old made his first senior start in the win over Preston in the previous round and made waves with his charged debut as a substitute against Crystal Palace in late December. It has left fans in no doubt as to his ‘proper Chels’ credentials, and Gilchrist reveals his attachment to the club runs deep in an exclusive programme interview.

'My grandad and my dad used to have season tickets,' he says. 'They used to go all the time, and my aunty used to go with them as well sometimes. So I obviously support Chelsea as well. I remember watching the Champions League final – the first time we won it – in my uncle’s living room. That was a good memory.

'Actually, my dad had a Football Manager game, or whatever it was called back then, and before I was even born, he made a player called "Alfie Gilchrist", who played for Chelsea. He had chosen the name and everything, and he played with that character – as me – at Chelsea. So it’s crazy how it’s come to life.'

We may have progressed to the Carabao Cup final this week, but we also paid tribute to Tommy Baldwin, one of our FA Cup heroes of 1970, who sadly passed away after a long illness. Programme editor Richard Godden remembers Baldwin as both a top-class forward and a huge character in a dressing room full of terrace idols, including insight from the man himself on his approach to the game, decades after he had retired.

'I used to play off the striker, a bit like Teddy Sheringham. Trap and turn, play people through, that was more or less what I did. A bit like Wayne Rooney in the way he chased back as well. I think a cross between the two of them.'

Baldwin’s voice cuts through the tribute piece constantly, bringing those days to life, and reflecting humorously on the fact that the chant, 'His name is Tommy Baldwin, he’s the leader of the team’, has never ceased being sung at Stamford Bridge.

'How many young kids hear it and wonder who Tommy Baldwin is? Hopefully it’s their dad and not granddad reminding them!'
