Live Now: Cape Epic 2024 - Stage 1

The results are in from the second day of racing at the 2024 Cape Epic. After 88km of racing, the Ghost Factory Racing and the World Bicycle Relief teams still lead the overall standings after some close stage times.

Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller continued their strong form from the prologue stage as they managed to hold a lead of just one second against Mona Mitterwallner and Candice Lill of the Cannondale Factory Racing squad. As the teams head into day three, the Ghost Factory Racing team lead the general classification by 1:06, with another five minutes back to the third-placed team.

Nino Schurter and Sebastian Fini couldn't match their winning speed from the prologue as they ended day two behind the Bugg Megamo team of Hans Becking and Wout Alleman. The deficit was just two seconds, so the Buff Megamo team was still around a minute and a half back from the race leader of Schruter and Fini. Matthew Beers and Howard Grotts lost 21 seconds to today's stage winners, but they still sit 2nd place overall with a 1:10 gap to the current race leaders.

Bravery will be required on Stage 1. Tulbagh, once a frontier town, is still an untamed mountain biking destination. New trails and established challenges ensure a fittingly difficult day. Four major climbs punctuate the day with Raptor Rise setting a tone of sweeping switchbacks through fynbos, continued by Boegoe and the Kliprivier Trails. Fanti’s Pass, infamous in its intensity ensures the day’s elevation gain easily exceeds 2 000 meters.

It’s not just all challenges and climbing though. Singletracks, never before ridden in a race, like Jan se Bos offer a welcome reward for uphill toils, as do established trails like Assegaaibos and God’s Window.
