Former Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe this week made a return to football, by participating in a four-day training workshop on club licensing.

Motlanthe was part of the CAF club licensing workshop in Cairo, Egypt.

An excited Motlanthe, who quit Safa last May, said the invitation came as a surprise as he was minding his own business working as a lawyer.

He said he seized the opportunity with both hands, adding that the invitation showed that his contribution to football was still valued.

“It is a privilege to be here to continue to learn [about new developments in football], implement and ensure full compliance for clubs in the country.

“I was never lost to football as I have been doing legal consultations within football. It also shows people recognise you even when you are not there and it means a lot to me. The refresher course is about [new] regulations on club licensing and how to implement them.”

Motlanthe, a practising lawyer, elaborated:

At the end of the workshop, we are all required to write an examination and if one does well he will then become an instructor. CAF can send you to other countries to conduct workshops on club licensing. This [training] has been a breath of fresh air.

If successful, Motlanthe will join former Safa CEO, Dennis Mumble, Orlando Pirates general manager Derrick Blackensee and Kabelo Bosilong, a club licensing consultant, as CAF club licensing instructors. The workshop ended yesterday.

Motlanthe’s invitation to the CAF headquarters coincides with Safa’s proposed new technical regulations, which are set to be implemented next season.

Last month Safa technical director Walter Steenbok announced a raft of new requirements for coaches in the structures across local club football.

According to the new rules, a head coach in the DStv Premiership must have a CAF A licence, while their assistants should hold CAF B badge. The same applies for coaches in the NFD. The changes are set to be enforced next season.
