Gift Motupa is the latest former PSL headliner to seek greener pastures after a dip in professional fortunes.

The 29-year-old had eye-catching spells at Orlando Pirates and Wits University FC which led to him being snapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Motupa was released by Masandawana in January after failing to earn regular minutes on the pitch

The forward had been rumoured to be wanted by Kaizer Chiefs, but it was his old Wits coach who extended the hand of redemption.

The AFCON break was viewed as a mini-preseason and Gavin Hunt invited Motupa to prove himself during their training camp and subsequent friendlies.

Unfortunately, Hunt claims to not have seen enough to offer the player a contract. Speaking to SoccerLaduma, Hunt explained:

"He was overweight and had to lose some kilos. He has been with us for two weeks now, running hard. We are not going to do anything until the end of the season. We can't."

As a free agent, Motupa will be able to sign with any club that is willing to offer him an agreeable contract. Still under 30 with a wealth of experience, he could be an attractive proposition should he not back himself to earn Hunt's trust by July.

He has made over 130 domestic appearances in all competitions, scoring almost 40 goals for four different clubs, as per TransferMarkt.

Gavin Hunt bracing for fixture congestion

Sports Brief recently reported on Hunt's concerns about fixture congestion with SuperSport United.

Matsatsantsa are fighting in three competitions: the CAF Confederations Cup, Nedbank Cup and the league.

Hunt lamented his lack of squad depth, stating that he had an abundance of youth but little experience.
