Springboks head coach Jacques Nienaber has named a group of 33 players for their second preparation camp ahead of the international season.

10 players who featured in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final – nine Stormers and Munster’s RG Snyman – have been included in the squad.

A host of overseas-based players from Ireland, France and Japan have been called up as the squad size more than doubles from that which participated in the first preparation camp in Durban.

Overseas-based players boost training squad

Having recovered from injury and put together a string of strong performances for Munster, Snyman returns to the group looking to earn his first Test cap since the 2019 Rugby World Cup final.

Ulster’s Duane Vermeulen also returns to the squad after wrapping up the URC season with the Irish province.

Injured Springboks Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Jaden Hendrikse and Thomas du Toit have all been included in the squad, where the Bok medical team will continue to monitor their progress and oversee their rehabilitation.

Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe, Joseph Dweba, Marvin Orie, Evan Roos, Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse all started the URC final for the Stormers and will link up with the side.

Premiership players like Handre Pollard, Andre Esterhuizen and Jasper Wiese are not yet available for selection.

Finally, the contingent of Japanese players consists of Malcolm Marx, Kwagga Smith, Lood de Jager, Franco Mostert, Willie le Roux and Damian de Allende.

Nienaber excited to get going

“We are delighted to have a quality training squad at this camp. The squad size will allow us to have productive on-field training sessions without having to rotate and manage players too much,” said Nienaber.

“We had a strong core of the players at the last preparation camp, and we intend to build on the foundation we laid there when we assemble in Durban, and I believe this will set us in good stead going into the Castle Lager Rugby Championship camp in Pretoria next month.

“This will mark the first time most of the players will be in the national set-up this season, as the alignment camps in Cape Town and Stellenbosch and the last preparation camp in Durban included mainly the locally based players. We did, however, have online alignment sessions with the overseas-based players, so we are excited about this opportunity to work with them in person.”

South Africa kick off their Rugby Championship campaign with a clash with Australia on Saturday, July 8 at Loftus Versfeld.
