The National Freedom Party (NFP), which has emerged as kingmaker in KwaZulu Natal, has rejected the IFP's proposed premier candidate Thami Ntuli and is hedging its bets between a government of national unity (GNU) including the IFP, ANC and DA, and going into coalition with former president Jacob Zuma's MK Party.

The NFP is tipped to make an announcement on its decision on coalitions on Thursday, bringing the coalitions discussions down to the wire.

Both pro-and anti-GNU sides - on one hand the IFP-ANC-DA bloc, and on the other the MK Party and EFF - desperately need the NFP vote.
