On Wednesday afternoon family, friends, close associates, and government dignitaries gathered at Durban's Playhouse Theatre to commemorate the life of the late legendary playwright, theatre director, and musician Mbongeni Ngema.

The 68-year-old died last week after a car crash near Bizana in the Eastern Cape.

The memorial, titled the Last Show in honour of Ngema's theatre and storytelling prowess, saw the programme begin with the old cast of Sarafina! performing the songs that earned Ngema critical acclaim and Tony nominations.
