Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango issues injury update ...
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is on the road to recovery after a harrowing head injury during the club's recent clash against Sekhukhune United.
The Ugandan international suffered a serious knock to the head following a collision with Sekhukhune captain Linda Mntambo late in the first half of Tuesday night's match, which saw him leaving the field on a stretcher with a deep cut and suspected concussion.
In a statement addressing the concerning incident, Onyango expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, reassuring fans of his condition.
"Horrible incident last evening but I’m out of danger and back to keep pushing with the team. It was just a precaution. Thanks everyone for showing your love and concern, I feel blessed to have you all," he shared.
The match, despite the unsettling turn of events, witnessed a scintillating start for the hosts as they secured a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United.
Tashreeq Matthews and Thapelo Morena scored within seven minutes early in the game, setting the tone for Sundowns' dominance.
Nigerian Chibuike Ohizu managed to pull one back for the visitors with a 50th-minute penalty, but it wasn't enough to derail Sundowns' momentum.
The win not only showcased Sundowns' formidable form but also extended their unbeaten streak to an impressive 46 league matches spanning two seasons.
With just six points needed from their remaining eight matches, Sundowns are well poised to claim their record-extending seventh consecutive league title.
Sundowns' strategic rotation saw them resting key players who featured in the recent CAF Champions League encounter against Esperance of Tunisia.
In a bid to maintain freshness for the crucial return leg, coach Rulani Mokwena fielded a different lineup, with veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango leading the squad.
However, it was not all smooth sailing for Sundowns, as Kenya defender Brian Onyango faced a challenging outing, culminating in a foul that led to Sekhukhune's penalty.
Amidst jeers from the crowd, Onyango was substituted off just before the hour mark highlighting the intensity of the encounter.
Despite the setback, Sundowns have firmly cemented their position at the top of the league table, boasting a commanding 13-point lead.
With only two more wins needed to seal their seventh successive league title the Chloorkop giants remain relentless in their pursuit of glory.
