In the wake of France's 2-1 friendly loss toGermany on Tuesday night, France boss Didier Deschamps explained that Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé was left on the bench with a knee complaint that could affect his status of the upcoming Champions League opener against Dortmund.

There are question marks over Kylian Mbappé's participation in Paris Saint-Germain's champions league season opener against BVB Dortmund in just under a week's time, the France captain having been benched for the friendly clash at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Tuesday.

Deschamps: 'A problem with his patellar tendon'

France boss Didier Deschamps explained the reason for his star's benching after the 2-1 defeat, which saw Antoine Griezmann pull one back from the spot (89', pen.) after Bayern's Thomas Müller (4') and Leroy Sané (87') had both scored.

"Kylian has had a problem with his patellar tendon, which is bothering him," Deschamps said after the match. "If he couldn't start, we weren't going to bring him on during the game."

The defeat was in stark contrast to Les Bleus' last five outings, all of which have come in Euro 2024 qualifying and all of which have been victories with clean sheets. Following their 2-0 win over Ireland on Thursday, France are within a step of qualification for next year's continental finals, but the immediate future for Mbappé is now shrouded in question marks.

Question marks for Nice, Dortmund

Deschamps' risk-averse approach for a friendly outing is easy to understand, but Mbappé has some important matches coming up - most notably Paris Saint-Germain's clash with Dortmund at the Parc des Princes next Tuesday - and club boss Luis Enrique will doubtless be very curious to get across the situation.

Paris Saint-Germain's next outing comes as early as Friday as they play host to OGC Nice - who picked up their first win of the season, also the first of the Farioli era, in Round 4 - before getting ready to kick off their continental campaign against Dortmund next week.

Although Mbappé could well sit out Friday's clash, the club's owners will certainly want to see their talismanic striker on the pitch as Enrique's men kick off their pursuit of the continental silverware they so covet.
