45 people have been reported dead after the bus they were travelling in crashed at the Mmamatlakala bridge on the R518 in Limpopo on Thursday morning.

Only one child, eight years old, survived and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The bus was travelling to Moria for the Easter Weekend church service when the incident happened.

It is alleged the bus driver lost control, colliding with barriers on the bridge, causing the bus to go over the bridge and hit the ground, where it caught fire.

“It has a Botswana registration number, and a process to confirm the citizenship of the victims will only commence after the foreign missions of both South Africa and Botswana have verified their citizenships,” reads the statement issued by the Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo.

The minister of transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, extends her deepest condolences to the families affected.

“I am sending my heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus crash near Mamatlakala. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with heightened alertness as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend,” said Chikunga.
