Women's world No. 8 Maria Sakkari will also be looking to make a strong start as she bids for a first Grand Slam title.

Top men’s match – Jordan Thompson v Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is a strong contender to walk away with yet another Wimbledon, yet another Grand Slam, and despite his advancing years he has made no suggestion that he is ready to walk away from tennis.

Of course, everyone is expecting to see a Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic thriller at SW19 but for that to happen they have to negotiate the early stages, and for Djokovic, he needs to get past Australian Jordan Thompson.

Against Pedro Cachin he was able to progress with a straight-sets victory.

A win for the Serbian and he will be into the third round, assuming rain does not stop, or delay, play.

Top women’s match – Maria Sakkari v Marta Kostyuk

Greece's Maria Sakkari is the top seeded woman in action on Wednesday and she will be widely expected to navigate her way past Marta Kostyuk.

The Ukrainian might expect a positive reception from the home ground given the strife in her country, and some players from Ukraine have been energised by the back they receive.

Sakkari however is an experienced and talented player but there is reason to believe there is room for an upset.

She has reached the semi-final of both the French Open and US Open, but she has yet to progress past the third round at SW19.

Brit watch

There are seven Brits in action on Wednesday.

Burrage and Kasatkina are on Centre Court while Medvedev plays Fery on Court One.

Heather Watson then follows against Barbora Krejcikova, and George Loffhagen takes on sixth seed Holger Rune.

Sonay Kartal is up against Eastbourne champion Madison Keys, and Heather Watson has a tough contest against 10th seed Barbora Krejcikova.

Jan Choinski faces Hubert Hukacz, and Daria Saville leads Katie Boulter.
