Black hoods, nudity, night of punishments: Student recounts horrific ...
News24 obtained more than 30 photographs taken during a surprise audit by the university's management at Wilgenhof.
Mocked about penis size, forced to drink a toxic mixture of linseed oil and aloe crystals, and having a liquid with a "urine-like odour" being poured over one's body – this was the type of punishment allegedly meted out to students at a men's residence at Stellenbosch University.
Horrific details of the abuse allegedly inflicted on some first-year students at the Wilgenhof residence in 2022 have been laid bare in a 23-page document penned by a student who experienced it first-hand and who left last year because he was "dead scared".
"The inner circle: A brief look into one student's journey through Wilgenhof residence" details how students were approached by members of the "Nagligte" (meaning "night lights", a disciplinary committee) "dressed like medieval executioners" and instructed to stand in a line and undress.
