Students Sufficiently Funded Despite Alleged Police Brutality at UFS
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has released its funds for all eligible students, according to spokesperson Maduvha Maseda.
Maseda said the universities are provided with the necessary student registration data to enable funding payments.
He also said this inquiry should be directed to the institutes as Nsfas ‘simply processes the students payments’.
A student activist at the University of the Free State (UFS) has claimed police brutality during his arrest.
According to him, he heard cries and saw fellow students attempting to rescue someone who was being taken away and assaulted.
The student was identified as Mtshali; he was heard saying he couldn’t breath and his arm was in pain.
Despite this incident, classes began as scheduled at all three school campuses.
Funding for the students has been made available in spite of the alleged police brutality.
It is, however, concerning that such brutality may have occurred and needs to be more thoroughly investigated.
Nsfas has fulfilled its financial responsibilities according to Maseda and the universities should ensure the processing of registration data is done correctly.
In conclusion,it is the responsibility of all institutions to provide a safe and respectful environment for their students.
