Tyla Recreates Aaliyah's Iconic Fur-Trimmed Tiger-Print Gown at the ...
There are some red-carpet looks that simply never go out of style, and Aaliyah’s iconic tiger-print Roberto Cavalli dress is one of them.
When the late R&B and pop star originally wore the dress for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, the look instantaneously made fashion history, with stars and style lovers alike referencing the zany and bold gown for generations to come. Now, even Tyla is putting her stamp on it.
On Sunday, the South African-born artist attended the MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, England, dressed in an identical Roberto Cavalli gown—save for the color. Rather than replicate the memorable canary yellow piece Aaliyah made famous, Tyla wore a sky blue iteration of the dress.

Other than the color swap, the rest of the look’s details were nearly indistinguishable from Aaliyah’s 2000 look, down to the cowl neckline, shaggy fur-trimmed leg slit, and striking black tiger stripe print.

While Aaliyah styled her dress with simple black heels with criss-crossing straps, Tyla kicked her look up a notch with glossy black leather heels with cutouts that wound all the way up to just below her knees. For some extra pizazz, she further accessorized with a silver choker and a sparkly bracelet.

Besides paying homage to Aaliyah, Tyla’s tiger-print look also nodded to her devoted fan base, which she has affectionately dubbed as her “Tygers.”
“I love incorporating tiger print and the effortless island vibes—especially in this era, because it’s obviously me introducing myself to the world and those themes are heavy in the stuff that we’re doing. We’re introducing it as part of the Tyla story,” she previously explained to Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s just so fun to make it all exciting for the fans. I’m excited to perform more and give people more visuals and content and just expand the world that we’ve created and allow more people in—just like how it used to be when I was younger and I was a fan girl. I really wanna create that type of excitement again.”
At this year's MTV EMAs, Tyla took home the awards for Best R&B, Best African Act, and Best Afrobeats.
