Since losing to Justin Gaethje back in 2020, Tony Ferguson has failed to claim a win in the octagon.

At the peak of his powers, ‘El Cucuy’ was a ferocious operator, striking fear into the hearts of his opposition.

Blessed with a remarkable engine and a formidable submission game, the former interim lightweight champion was a sight to behold, recording a sensational 12-fight winning streak.

Alas, his career is now a shadow of what it once was. Having slowed down significantly, the popular sportsman is desperately struggling to perform how he used to.

On Saturday evening, he went head-to-head with Michael Chiesa, a man on a losing run of his own. Regardless, Ferguson was unable to fend off his rival, succumbing to a first-round rear-naked choke defeat.

Following the result, at the post-fight press conference, the icon admitted that he’d struggled to get into the zone prior to the fight, throwing up several times before he had to leave his locker room.

He said: “I felt sick, I threw up maybe three or four times being nervous as f**k. I usually don’t get nervous, but in the back, I was kind of yacking and dry-heaving, which is kind of funny how that works. This is the only sport that makes me do that. When it goes to any other thing, it’s kind of interesting how it goes.”

Tony Ferguson refuses to guarantee his retirement

While Ferguson’s career isn’t trending in the direction he’d like, his fire to compete still burns bright.

In his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, he put one glove on the canvas, leaving the door ajar for another dance. He discussed his commitment to the UFC, insisting that he doesn’t want to fight anywhere else.

However, he later confessed that if the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization feels it’s time for him to move on, he would be willing to consider other offers.

The 40-year-old said: “If those fans out there are willing enough to come out here and fly and spend thousands of dollars to come and watch me compete somewhere, I guarantee you they’re going to follow me somewhere, and that’s the humblest thing I can say. Because wherever I’m at or what I’m doing, I’m gonna get better, and better, and better.”

Tony Ferguson says if Dana White decides that tonight was his last fight in the UFC, he would consider fighting somewhere else:

Tony Ferguson has the longest losing streak in UFC history

While Ferguson has cemented his place as an MMA legend and is considered a hero by many, his losing run has broken new ground.

During his heyday, the Mexican-American was thought to be the man to potentially dethrone Khabib Nurmgaomedov. However, he never got his chance to challenge the Russian, and now holds the record for the worst losing-skid the company has ever seen.

At the weekend, Ferguson overtook B.J. Penn with a consecutive eighth defeat.

Regardless, while the athlete may never be the fighter he once was, the MMA community will never forget the terrifying man who ran rampage in the 155-pound division.
