Veteran media personality, businesswoman and author, Thabiso Sikwane’s family described her as a straightforward person who tackled issues with respect and dignity irrespective of one’s age. Sikwane died on Saturday morning at 50.

Sikwane’s aunt described her as a caring and compassionate person who loved her family. She commended her for raising her children with love, gentle care and firmness.

On Friday, Thato Sikwane, who is the late Thabiso’s ex-husband and famously known as DJ Fresh, shared his very first interview with her - and that was her last interview alive.

The interview is on his WAW! What A Week with DJ Fresh podcast. The two announced their divorce in February 2022, after two decades of marriage.

When he shared a snippet of what he called part one of their interview, DJ Fresh said he had known Thabiso since 1998 - when she read news on his show.

He added that he was excited and nervous at the same time. The DJ also revealed that Thabiso, who worked for radio stations such as YFM and Kaya 959, was his podcast producer for a month and a half.

"It’s so surreal, I’m so excited. [It’s] surreal because I’ve seen incredible, phenomenal women sit in this chair. Surreal because it’s something we’ve never done before. We’ve never interviewed each other in the combined 50 years of broadcasting,” said Sikwane at the beginning of the interview.

One would say the universe was preparing everyone for the departure of the author of Modimo O A Go Rata because the 50-minutes episode had her in tears as people close to her, including her mother sent in voice messages just praising her and the good person she was.

Thabiso's eldest son, Thato Sikwane Junior, thanked her for her support and for encouraging him to aim for the sky and never forget where he came from. He said his mother always reassured him that God was the source of everything and that he could achieve anything he puts his mind to.

DJ Fresh’s daughter, Reneilwe, described Thabiso as a ‘Jesus freak’ who was loving, selfless and caring.

Following her death, DJ Fresh shared a video on his Instagram sharing that Thabiso died at about 6.30am on Saturday.

We are told it could have been a cardiac event, but what would have caused it hasn’t been ascertained. We await a post-mortem that will give everyone clarity because it doesn’t make sense to anyone how this would happen out of the blue.

On other sad news as Women's Month wraps up, the family of the legendary praise poet, Jessica Mbangeni also released a statement announcing her death.
