Caitlin Cleveland, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment released the following statement today regarding World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2024:

“As the Minister of Education, Culture, and Employment and a parent, I have the privilege of seeing the pivotal role that teachers play in the growth and development of our children from both sides of the coin. Every single day, their work goes far beyond the classroom walls, as they continually inspire, mentor, and guide our students to achieve their best.

“The first World Teachers’ Day was proclaimed by UNESCO on October 5 in 1994, and this year’s theme, Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education, emphasizes the importance of listening to educators and their input to strengthen our education system. On this day, we honour the dedication and commitment of teachers in helping to shape the future of our children across the North.

“Schools are a hub of activity in smaller communities, and the success of students relies not only on the work teachers do inside the classroom but also on the strong collaboration between schools and families. Parents and caregivers are critical partners in their children's education, and NWT teachers work tirelessly to foster these relationships, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to thrive.

“Education systems around the world are still feeling the effects of the past few years, and everyone working in education acknowledges the changes in learning and attention and program delivery. While these challenges are being addressed, once again, it is the teachers that understand the needs of children and the best ways to reach them. Their resourcefulness, innovative approaches and care have ensured that students continue to receive the best instruction and social development, despite the remaining obstacles.

“On World Teachers’ Day, please join me in thanking the educators of the Northwest Territories for their unwavering contribution to the improvement of student outcomes. Your efforts truly make a difference, and we as a territory and connected families are deeply grateful for all that you do.”
