Every year on October 5, World Teachers' Day is celebrated to honour the outstanding efforts of educators who are essential in forming the brains of future generations. This day was established by UNESCO in 1994, and since then, it has gained international recognition for emphasising the value of teachers in delivering excellent education and encouraging an appreciation of learning in their students.
As we celebrate World Teachers Day 2024, it is the perfect opportunity to consider the vital role that educators play in empowering people through education and changing society.
UNESCO mentions: “The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.”
The theme for the 2024 World Teachers' Day is "Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education." This theme is crucial as it highlights the importance of recognising and amplifying the voices of educators, addressing their obstacles, and the benefits they provide in the classroom. The 2024 celebrations will focus on the need for a renewed commitment to listening as well as supporting teachers because they are the essential players in establishing the future of education.
