Sundowns and Stellies renew rivalry in MTN8 semis - POWER 98.7
Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC are set to renew their rivalry in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal on Wednesday at 19:00 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Komphela returns to Mamelodi Sundowns as senior coachSundowns were less clinical than usual in their 1-0 victory over Polokwane City in the quarterfinals.
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi will be focused on ensuring that his side returns to their high-scoring form.
Stellenbosch FC, under the guidance of coach Steve Barker, has proven to be a tough opponent in cup competitions. Fresh off a 3-1 triumph against TS Galaxy in the quarterfinals, Barker is optimistic about his team’s chances, especially given Sundowns’ recent adjustments.
“They’ve only really had one competitive game. So, if there is an opportunity, it might be now before they settle and find sort of their best way forward and their best combinations,” Barker said, suggesting that this could be an opportunity to capitalise on any lingering uncertainties.
This semifinal tie is a repeat of last season’s Nedbank Cup semifinal encounter, where Stellenbosch narrowly missed out on reaching the final. Determined to make amends, Barker’s side is ready to embrace the challenge.
“Lessons have been learnt, and we can only grow, and the more you’re in the semifinals, the more you’re knocking on the door to make the finals, and the more the door will open.
“So, we’ve given ourselves another opportunity. We’ve got here, and it’s our responsibility to give ourselves the best chance to make a final,” Barker emphasised.
With the return leg scheduled for the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, both teams will be keenly aware of the importance of securing a strong result in the first leg.
