Defence guru committed to Stormers
Norman Laker will remain in his position as the DHL Stormers’ defence coach despite reported interest from England.
Laker was reportedly on a shortlist to replace Felix Jones as England’s defence coach after the former Bok assistant resigned from his position under a cloud.
Jones, a former Springbok attack coach, was “unhappy with the unstable working environment” in England’s camp, as The Times of London reported.
However, England have announced the appointment of director of rugby of the French club Oyonnax, Joe El-Abd, as Jones’ replacement.
According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Laker will stay as part of the Stormers’ coaching staff until at least 2027.
Laker did not receive an official offer from England, but was not keen on a move overseas as he is settled in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Jones is being forced by the RFU to work from home while he serves a 12-month notice period, during which he will not be able to join another national team.
