Kitshoff addresses fears over injury

Steven Kitshoff has moved to ease fears about his playing future after the DHL Stormers and Springbok prop had a successful neck operation.

Kitshoff, who was sidelined from Springbok duty this year, has missed the start of the Stormers’ 2024-25 season after a career-threatening injury in September.

The double World Cup winner took to social media to provide clarity following speculation surrounding the severity of the injury he sustained during a Currie Cup match for DHL Western Province against Griquas.

Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman had earlier addressed Kitshoff’s situation during an online press conference on Monday, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the player’s recovery.

“We haven’t spoken to the specialist or gotten any feedback from his doctors,” Snyman admitted.

“I actually went to him just as he came out of surgery, just spent a bit of time with him. No update in terms of his situation. The first thing is that we want him to recover, and we’ll take it from there.”

Kitshoff later provided a more definitive update, confirming that his surgery on the C1 and C2 vertebrae was successful.

In a message aimed at reassuring fans and dismissing swirling rumours, the 32-year-old hinted at his determination to return to the field despite the daunting road to recovery.

“Thrilled to share that my operation was a big success!” Kitshoff wrote on social media. “A massive thank you to my incredible doctors and nurses for their amazing care, and to all my family, friends, and loyal supporters—your support means the world to me!

“It’s going to be a long recovery journey, but I’m excited for the future ahead.

“Please trust me for updates on my progress and don’t believe any other sources. Here’s to healing!”
