Spurs stories | Off The Shelf | Younes and Daws recall the 125 game ...
At around 9.15pm on Monday 1 October, 2007, as Michael Dawson describes it, we were staring 'disaster' in the face.
Everything was in place for a night to remember as we celebrated our 125th anniversary at the Lane. Our legends were out in full force - the likes of double greats Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones and Les Allen, David Ginola stood alongside goalkeeping greats Ray Clemence and Pat Jennings, trophies were paraded, special flags were waving - what a night!
The only thing was that Villa - led by Martin O'Neill - hadn't read the script and after an hour of the game, were leading 4-1 - Martin Laursen's double quickly cancelled out Dimitar Berbatov's opener, and further goals from Gabby Agbonlahor and Craig Gardner looked to have taken Villa out of sight - the classic party poopers!
But, as Younes and Daws recalled during Younes' episode of our official Off The Shelf podcast, the players weren't having it, not on this night of nights.
Pascal Chimbonda pulled a goal back for 4-2 on 69 minutes, Robbie Keane gave us hope from the penalty spot and 4-3 on 82 minutes and as time ticked away, Younes popped up in Villa's box to smash home the equaliser - scenes at the Lane!
Here's what they had to say on that night 17 years ago (!)...
Younes: "It was a big day for the club, obviously, less for us new signings because, obviously, we...
Daws: "Because you're still learning, aren't you?"
Younes: "Exactly, and we didn't know much about the history of the club also. But obviously, after the years, you understand more. What I knew is we were losing 4-1 that day, and that's bad. That was really bad. I think it was 15 minutes left to go, I think."
Daws: "I remember Chimbonda scored."
Younes: "Keano scored, and we were just pushing. We were just pushing right to the end. And again, this is where, as a centre-back, you know... that was back in October, I think. So, I was only there for a month, maybe, and I've learned in the space of a month, I've learned a lot. The Sunderland game (Younes' debut, August 2007, Sunderland won with a late, late goal) and basically all of the games - play until the end. And we did, we did as a team. I was lucky to score the fourth goal, but it could have been anyone, because with the pressure that we were putting in there, Villa couldn't resist."
Daws: "I remember the celebrations, because at 4-1, you look now, we're all wearing the shirts, we've got all the ex-legends at the football club, and it was looking like a disaster! By the way, have you still got the shirt?"
Younes: "Yeah, back in France. And the boots!"
Daws: "Yes, I've got the shirt."
Younes: "Love it. It was a bit hot also for Martin at the time. I really liked Martin because he signed me. It was just that moment, basically, coming back from nowhere, 4-4, 125th birthday of the club."
Daws: "Yes, and that season ended very well, the League Cup Final - you came on for Robbie Keane."
Younes: "Yes, another special day."
