The Springboks secured a dominant 30-12 bonus-point victory over the Wallabies in Perth, keeping their winning streak alive in the 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship.

Perth, Australia (18 August 2024) – The Springboks have once again brought pride to South Africa, securing a commanding 30-12 victory over the Wallabies in a rain-soaked encounter at Optus Stadium in Perth.

This win not only kept their winning streak alive in the 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship but also reaffirmed their dominance on Australian soil, a feat that has been hard to come by for many years.

In challenging conditions, the Springboks showcased their resilience and tactical brilliance. Despite the slippery field and relentless rain, they managed to outplay the Wallabies, securing a vital bonus point by crossing the try line four times without allowing their opponents to score a single try. This victory ensures that the Boks remain firmly at the top of the Championship log, with their sights set on continued success. The match was not without its difficulties. The Springboks faced uncontested scrums early in the second half, a situation that could have tilted the balance in favour of the Wallabies. However, the South African side remained focused and determined, adapting to the conditions and maintaining their composure throughout the game. Even the early loss of captain Salmaan Moerat due to a head knock couldn’t derail their momentum.

Eben Etzebeth, who stepped up as captain following Moerat’s departure, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance.

“We wanted this win, it does not happen that often that you get two in a row in Australia,” said Etzebeth.

“We will take a lot of positives from this win, also as we started with 10 changes from the Brisbane game and those players would have gained valuable experience as well.”

The Boks started the match on the back foot, conceding an early penalty that gave the Wallabies a brief 3-0 lead. However, the South African team quickly found their rhythm. A brilliant try by Aphelele Fassi, following a clever kick from Makazole Mapimpi, put the Boks ahead, and they never looked back. Despite some missed opportunities, including a disallowed try and a couple of handling errors, the Springboks’ dominance in the second half was undeniable.

The driving maul proved to be a powerful weapon for the Boks, with Marco van Staden and Malcolm Marx both scoring tries from this tactic. Marx’s two tries in the second half, combined with solid defence, sealed the victory and secured the bonus point. Even when the Wallabies tried to mount a comeback, the Boks’ defence held firm, and they prevented their opponents from crossing the try line.

As the final whistle blew, the Springboks celebrated not just a win but a historic achievement.

For the first time since 1971, South Africa has won back-to-back Tests on Australian soil, showcasing the team’s strength, determination, and unity. With this victory, the Boks will proudly bring the Mandela Challenge Plate back to South Africa, a symbol of their continued excellence on the rugby field.

This performance in Perth is a clear indication that the Springboks are not just playing to win—they are playing to inspire a nation. Each match in the 2024 Castle Lager Rugby Championship has been a showcase of their skill, strategy, and unyielding spirit. As the Championship continues, there is no doubt that the Springboks will remain a source of immense pride for South Africans everywhere as they continue their journey towards even greater achievements.
