After losing 12 of the last 13 Tests against the Wallabies in Brisbane, the Springboks are determined to get a rare win in the fixture when the sides meet in the city for their Rugby Championship opener on Saturday.

That was the word from Springboks flyer Cheslin Kolbe who made his Test debut in a 23-18 defeat at Suncorp Stadium in 2018.

Despite the Boks‘ woeful record in Brisbane, Kolbe is hopeful they can change their fortunes there against their hosts this weekend but said it’s important for the world champions to stick to their game-plan if they want to be victorious this weekend.

Last Bok victory in Brisbane registered in 2013

South Africa’s last victory over Australia was registered in 2013 and although the back-to-back Rugby World Cup winners head into Saturday’s clash as favourites, the 30-year-old is wary of their opponents.

“I made my Test debut in Brisbane, and it didn’t turn out to be a good result, but it’s good to be back here and in the team,” said Kolbe. “We have new coaching staff and players, so it will be important to execute our plan well.

“If the forwards set a strong foundation for us up-front, hopefully it will create opportunities that we can exploit.

“We haven’t played against them a lot down under, so as a team we want to go out there and deliver our best performance possible.”

A key change in the Springboks’ coaching set-up is the appointment of highly rated attack coach Tony Brown and Kolbe is enjoying his time under the former All Blacks fly-half’s guidance.

“Tony has brough fresh ideas with his background as a player and coach, and he’s really been great in the system,” he said.

“He encourages us to express ourselves and play what we see in front of us within the team structure, and I believe we’ll keep getting better at that the more we play.”

Although the Wallabies head into this year’s Rugby Championship campaign lying in ninth position in World Rugby’s official rankings, they have a new head coach in Joe Schmidt and go into Saturday’s clash in a confident mood after winning all three their Tests this year – against Wales and Georgia.

“They are a good team, so we need to be as well prepared as we can be,” said Kolbe.

‘Looking forward to this opportunity’

“They have a good X-factor in their back three and can create something out of nothing, so we are looking forward to this opportunity to test ourselves. That said, our focus will be on what we want to do and achieve on the field.”

The Boks will have some inexperienced players in their ranks with the likes of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (fly-half) and Elrigh Louw (number eight) set to make their first Test starts while rookie utility forward Ben-Jason Dixon has been named on the replacements bench.

Kolbe believes with such talented individuals in the side, the Boks’ future is bright ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be held in Australia.

“The future is exciting for the Springboks with the young talent coming through,” he added.

“It’s good to have some healthy competition because it brings the best out of all of us. For me personally, I just always want to go out there and give my best whenever I take the field.”
