Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan rattled the South African batting line-up as India's young guns delivered big in the first ODI of the ongoing 3-match series against the Proteas on Sunday, December 17. Friends off the field, Arshdeep and Avesh shared 9 wickets between them as they rewrote history books in a sensational show of fast bowling at the Wanderers in Johannesburg as South Africa were bundled out for just 116 in the series opener.

On a used pitch that was expected to get slower and slower as the game progressed, Arshdeep Singh ran riot as he knocked off South Africa's top-order as the hosts slipped to 52 for 4 at the end of their first 10 overs. Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bat, but the South Africa captain quickly regretted his call as Arshdeep, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan troubled the Proteas batters with swing and seam as the Wanderers pitch offers plenty of assistance to the Indian pace trio.

Avesh Khan joined the party by striking twice in the 11th over as South Africa slipped to 52 for 7 before they huffed and puffed to 116. Avesh bowled a ripper to get rid of captain Markram and also got the big wicket of David Miller to wipe out South Africa's hopes of staging a comeback.

Arshdeep finished with 5 for 37 and became the first Indian pacer to pick a 5-wicket haul against South Africa in ODIs while Avesh missed the mark by just a wicket as Kuldeep Yadav got the final wicket as India bowled only 2.3 overs of spin on Sunday.

"My job became easier after you started it. I had to just hit the right lengths and lines and I still got 4 wickets after you got 4. If feels very nice that two brothers, who always keep hanging around together and roaming around together, it felt very nice that we shared 9 wickets together. We talk about cricket whenever we are together, we talk about field placings, what to bowl to different batters. It felt nice," Avesh Khan told the BCCI after India won the first ODI by 8 wickets.

Arshdeep also recalled a photoshoot with Avesh on the eve of the first ODI, saying it gave them motivation to do well on the field the following day. Arshdeep ran through the South African top-order and he got Heinrich Klaasen, the danger man, with a ripper of a delivery that seamed in after pitching on a good length.

South Africa's total of 116 was their lowest in ODI cricket at the iconic Wanderers as none of their batters had any answers to the rip-roaring spells from Arshdeep and Avesh.

"It felt very nice. The photo shoot that I did with you yesterday, I got a lot of motivation from that, boost from that. I was determined to do well today," Arshdeep added.

"If you hear this, you will think I am making stories. But before going to sleep yesterday, I visualised that I would get 5 wickets and would celebrate. I am thinking good things, I am in a good mindset. I am in constant touch with the support staff."

India rode on fifties from debutant Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer to comfortably chase down the target with 200 balls to spare. The visitors will be looking to taken an unbeatable lead in the series when the two sides meet in the second ODI in Gqebehra on Tuesday, December 19.
