KwaZulu-Natal is grappling with significant snowfall, prompting the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, to mobilise emergency services to assist stranded motorists.

“We are encouraged by the hard work and partnership between private and public emergency rescue services, who are assisting stranded motorists on various routes affected by the snow,” said Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya.

He mentioned the team’s commitment to tackling the accumulated snow using appropriate snowplough equipment amid erratic weather patterns linked to climate change.

“As the department, we are paying close attention to key routes in KwaZulu-Natal that remain closed due to heavy snowfall, ice, and rain,” he added, listing critical closures, including the N3 Toll Route from Estcourt to Harrismith and the R74 from Harrismith to Bergville.

The police have also deployed members to provide assistance and warm meals to commuters stuck on the N3 between Estcourt and Mooi River since Friday.

“Among the stranded commuters are police officers, who, despite being in the same situation, are providing security services to fellow travellers,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

He noted that police are working alongside rescue and humanitarian organisations, battling challenging conditions to ensure safety and essential services are maintained.

Additionally, the Border Management Authority (BMA) announced the closure of several ports of entry due to the snowfall.

“This precaution is taken to ensure the safety of travellers, tourists, and officials, as the current conditions pose a significant danger,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Communications and Marketing for the BMA, Mmemme Mogotsi.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to stay off the roads until conditions improve.
