Late Lukebakio Strike Not Enough For Sevilla In Alaves Defeat
September 21, (THEWILL) – Deportivo Alaves delivered a solid performance on Friday evening to claim a 2-1 win over Sevilla at the Mendizorroza Stadium. The home side took control early and maintained their advantage despite a late scare from the visitors. The result lifted Alaves further up the La Liga table, boosting their hopes of securing a stable position this season.
The match kicked off with Alaves on the front foot, and their pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Carlos Vicente struck a precise right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the Sevilla goal. The goal, which was scored minutes after Kelechi Iheanacho was introduced to replace the injured Isaac Romero, came from a cross by Nahuel Tenaglia, setting the tone for what would be a difficult evening for the Sevilla defence.
Alaves doubled their lead in the 60th minute through Carlos Martín. The striker found himself in the right place at the right time to finish from close range, giving Alaves a comfortable 2-0 cushion. Sevilla struggled to mount an effective response until the closing stages of the match with substitutions that included Chidera Ejuke.
Sevilla’s breakthrough came in the 83rd minute when Dodi Lukebakio scored from a well-placed left-footed shot into the top left corner of the net. Assisted by Saúl Ñíguez, the goal sparked a late push from Sevilla, but it proved to be too little, too late, as Alaves held firm to secure the win.
This victory sees Deportivo Alaves climb further up the league standings, while Sevilla will need to regroup and find form quickly if they are to avoid falling behind in the early race for European football.
