Selena Gomez Reaches Settlement in Mobile Game Likeness Lawsuit

Singer sued Clothes Forever — Styling Game for $10 million in April 2020; terms of tentative settlement not revealed

Selena Gomez has reached a tentative settlement in the lawsuit she filed against a mobile game maker she claimed used her likeness without permission.

The terms of the settlement, filed Thursday in a Los Angeles superior court and obtained by Rolling Stone, were not disclosed. Pending the judge’s approval, the settlement allows both parties to avoid a scheduled October trial date.

Over three years ago, in April 2020, Gomez sued the makers of the mobile game Clothes Forever — Styling Game for up to $10 million, claiming that they stole her image and likeness.

The lawsuit stated that the game features an image that “blatantly rips off a popular image of Gomez” that appeared on the cover of Flare, and that the use of the singer’s likeness “creates the false impression that she has endorsed the Game or has something to do with the Game, and undoubtedly is intended to attract consumers to make use of the Game.”

“Selena Gomez is a style icon,” Alex Weingarten, an attorney for the singer, said in a statement to Rolling Stone at the time. “This is an egregious violation of Selena’s rights, which we will litigate vigorously to vindicate.”

Along with Gomez, the lawsuit claimed that Clothes Forever used the images and likenesses of Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift, and Kim Kardashian.

At press time, Clothes Forever – Styling Game — a product of the Chinese game publisher Guangzhou Fiedong Software Technology — is no longer available on the Apple App Store.
