Four and a half years after Vittorio Massone, the former head of Bain in South Africa, left the country in the midst of an inquiry, claiming ill health, he has rebuilt a life for himself abroad as the head of a division at an Italian car distribution company.

But missing from his polished CV is any mention of the work he, and the local office of the consultancy he headed up, did for the SA Revenue Service (SARS) - or the train wreck he left behind. 

Massone, who is Italian, headed up Bain SA's operations between 2010 and 2018, during which it became embroiled in a costly scandal at the tax agency. The scandal was to cost Bain R217 million in fees that it ultimately returned to SARS.
