Cape Town City will be looking to extend their excellent recent run in the DStv Premiership when they host Royal AM on Friday as they go in search of a unique piece of club history.

Eric Tinkler’s side will be searching for a fifth successive league victory on the trot, something they have never managed before in their relatively short history.

Since being formed in the 2016-17 season when owner John Comitis purchased the status of Mpumalanga Black Ace and relocated the club to Cape Town, City have won four league games in a row on several occasions.

But they have never managed five and that is the carrot being dangled for the team on Friday, which ironically will come just after they slipped to four league defeats in a row earlier this campaign.

Depending on other results, victory over Royal Am could see City climb into second in the table, two points off Mamelodi Sundowns in top spot, though they will have played a full four games more.

It is a decent position for the club to be in given that they have played seven of their first 11 DStv Premiership games away from home this season due to the pitch being re-laid at the Cape Town Stadium.

By the halfway mark in the season, they will have played nine of their 15 games away, which means the reverse fixtures will see them mostly at home in the second half of the campaign, where they have traditionally been very strong.

They have lost just four of their last 36 home matches in the league.

City have a mixed record against Royal AM since the clubs first clashed in 2021. They lead the head-to-head 3-2 with one draw, though in Cape Town there has been one win apiece and a draw in three games.
