It's the away side's chance to enjoy a spell of possession, working the ball right, left and back to the right again before getting it into the box. However, the chance to have a shot is wasted and Real break.

Benzema sets up Rodrygo but the forward slips and hits the deck as he's about to pull the trigger.

HOSTS COMMANDING THE BALL

The hosts are camped in the Rayo half but are unable to create anything clear-cut. Rodrygo cuts in from the left and takes on a shot from distance but it's well over the bar.

RUDIGER SHOT

The former Chelsea man is given acres of space to run into and he uses all of it, surging to the edge of the Rayo box and having a shot on goal. He drags it well wide of the post, however.

SAVE

Palazon takes the ball on and bears down on the Madrid goal before firing a low shot that calls Courtois into action. The Belgian gets down well to divert the ball out for a corner.

EASY SAVE

Rayo win a free-kick and take on the shot from miles out. It bounces in front of Courtois but he gathers comfortably.

HALF-CHANCE

Rodrygo floats a ball into the back post for Valverde, who meets it well but can't direct it on target.

SHOT

Madrid might have to play more directly to unsettle their opponents. Once again, Rayo steal possession and get a shot away through Comesana.

RAYO CONTINUE TO PRESS

The visitors are more than holding their own here. They continue to force mistakes from their opponents but just aren't able to find that last bit of quality required.

SUPPORT FOR VINICIUS

Applause rings out around the Bernabeu for Madrid's No. 20, Vinicius Junior, after the racist abuse he suffered at the hands of Valencia fans on Sunday. Nice touch!

CLASS FROM MODRIC

Some brilliant link-up play between Modric, Benzema and Carvajal nearly unlocks the Rayo defence. Kroos wins the ball back and then earns his side a corner but it comes to nothing.

BETTER FROM LOS BLANCOS

Madrid are able to play out from the back and beat the press, which sparks one of the better moves of the game. The ball is played out to Carvajal on the right, but his tempting delivery is well handled by the Rayo defence.

CHANCE

Real Madrid look very susceptible at the back here. Lejeune has the ball on the left wing for Rayo and whips in a dangerous low cross. It is only partially dealt with before it falls for Lopez again, but his shot is well blocked.

HIGH PRESS WORKING FOR AWAY SIDE

Rayo Vallecano's tactics are clear to see but they are proving effective so far. The high press continues to force errors and results in a chance for Lopez, but his shot is straight down the throat of Courtois, who is equal to the task.

PROBING

Madrid work a corner short and the ball ends up with Camavinga. He looks up and delivers a pinpoint ball to Benzema at the back post but his header back across goal is well gathered by Dimitrievski.

MADRID COME FORWARD

The hosts enjoy their first period of possession, with Camavinga picking up the ball in space. He can't pick out Rodrygo but Madrid come again. The ball is worked to Rudiger on the left flank but his fizzing cross is well intercepted by Dimitrievski in the Vallecano goal.

QUIET START

Not much to report in the opening exchanges here. Although the visitors look comfortable so far. Valentin had a shot from distance that was well over the bar but the only action of note so far.

RISKY

Rudiger and Courtois take a risk at the back and nearly get caught out before the goalkeeper eventually cleared his lines.
