What Real Madrid have said about Man United £59m summer deal – report

Real Madrid have said Leny Yoro’s decision to join Manchester United ahead of them this summer is logical, given he would not have earned as much with them, according to The Athletic.

The 18-year-old joined the Red Devils from Lille in a £59 million deal in July, but Madrid had been counting on his arrival, selling academy defender Rafa Marin to Napoli as a result.

Yoro had been telling Madrid he only wanted to join them hours before informing them he was going to Man United, which prompted them to move very slowly with Lille, only going as high as an offer of £21m to £30m in negotiations with them.

Talks reached a standstill between both clubs, which gave the Old Trafford club a chance, with their approach changing everything.

“He will earn a lot of money,” a senior source at Madrid said back in July after Yoro opted for Man United.

“He will be fine there.”

Unfortunately, the Frenchman is out of action until 2025 after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against Arsenal in the United States ten days after joining the Red Devils, and they cannot wait for him to return following a woeful start to the campaign.

Man United were willing to part with such a huge fee for a player with just a year left on his deal just to pip Madrid and Liverpool to his services, handing him personal terms the Spanish club would not have.

Yoro has plenty to prove when he returns to full fitness despite an outstanding campaign in the Ligue 1 last season, and Man United will hope making him the most expensive player aged 18 or younger is worth it in the end.

They have been accused of wasting money in the transfer market for years, but the fact that INEOS were willing to sanction the deal for the teenager speaks volumes.

However, only time will tell whether Man United made the right decision, and all eyes will be on Yoro going forward.
