Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal faces an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament injury after his side’s 2-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti said the team were “worried” about the 32-year-old, and returned to a familiar complaint of managers and players - that injuries are caused by an increasingly busy calendar.
The Italian said: "Something happened that happens a lot, because of the calendar, and it happened to a very, very important player for us."
The Spanish veteran wrote on Instagram after the match that he would be out of action for several months as he would require surgery on the injury.
"Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I'm going to have to go through surgery and be off the field for a few months," Carvajal, 32, wrote.
"Already looking forward to starting recovery and coming back like a beast."
He appeared to suffer the injury during a collision with Yeremy Pino, and was taken off in tears on a stretcher.
Real Madrid said in a statement that Carvajal suffered, "a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a ruptured external collateral ligament and a ruptured popliteus tendon in his right leg.”
Brazilian striker Vinicius Jr. was also suffering from a “cervical injury”, the club said.
Real do not play again until Saturday October 19, when they play Celta Vigo away from home.
