Real Madrid could force move for Liverpool 'target' as Raphinha ...

18 Dec 2023

The fallout from Liverpool’s disappointing goalless draw against Manchester United continues. Although it is far from the end of the Reds’ title ambitions, it has dampened their hopes somewhat as 2024 approaches.

Liverpool will of course have the chance to reclaim top spot in the Premier League before Christmas, with a huge game against Arsenal coming up on Saturday. Jürgen Klopp though will be concerned by his side’s performance against United, as well as an injury list that has grown some more.

The Liverpool boss will be keeping his fingers crossed for good news after Ryan Gravenberch was forced off during Sunday’s game with what looked to be a hamstring problem. With the fixtures coming thick and fast, Klopp might well be tempted to dip into the January transfer market, despite appearing reluctant to do so.

He might well find his path to one potential option in defense blocked by Real Madrid after the weekend’s developments. Here is the Liverpool.com take on some of the biggest stories around European football today after Sunday's draw with United..

Real Madrid confirms David Alaba injury

Real Madrid defender David Alaba has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, the La Liga club has confirmed. The 31-year-old had to be helped off the pitch during Real’s win over Villarreal at the weekend.

It’s the second such injury to be suffered by a center-back for the club this season, with Éder Militão forced off during the first game of the season. The lack of options could force Carlo Ancelotti to make a move for a new defender in the January transfer market.

Liverpool.com says: Not only could Alaba and Militão’s injuries affect Real, but it could have a knock-on impact on Liverpool and some of its Premier League rivals. According to Marca, Real is unlikely to call Rafa Marin back from his loan at Alaves, meaning a move for a new defender looks the most likely outcome.

Gonçalo Inácio could therefore be a target for the Spanish giant, with Portuguese outlet Record (via Fichajes) reporting Real is in the running for the Sporting defender. Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked, but may have to concede defeat if Ancelotti and co come calling.

Barcelona names Raphinha price

Barcelona is willing to listen to offers for Raphinha in the January transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Sport. The former Leeds forward won’t come cheaply though.

According to the report, Barcelona values the Brazilian at $109m (£86m/€100m). Raphinha is said to be reluctant to leave, although offers will be entertained, with Manchester United and Saudi Arabian sides said to be in the hunt.

Liverpool.com says: Having been previously linked with Raphinha, Liverpool might also be interested to learn that Barcelona is willing to offload Raphinha. For the price suggested though, the Reds might be better-served looking elsewhere for a potential heir to Mohamed Salah.
