63 years since first Intercontinental Cup triumph

On 4 September 1960, Real Madrid clinched their first ever Intercontinental Cup against Montevideo side Peñarol. The Whites defeated the winners of the Copa Libertadores in this first edition of the competition over two legs. The first leg was played in Uruguay and ended 0-0.

The return leg was played at the Bernabéu and Real Madrid produced an emphatic win (5-1). Miguel Muñoz‘s side set themselves on course for victory in the early stages and found themselves three goals to the good in the opening ten minutes. A brace from Puskas, a goal from Di Stéfano, who turned in a shot from the Hungarian, got the early goals. Herrera and Gento completed the scoring.
 
Eight times world champions
63 years later, Real Madrid are the team to have won the most world champion trophies. The club has amassed eight Club World Cups, the first three came under the old format of the Intercontinental Cup.
