Bayern Munich puts RB Leipzig to the sword in Frauen-Bundesliga ...

RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich notched a 6-2 Frauen-Bundesliga win on Friday over RB Leipzig in a match that, despite an early scare, was ultimately not close at all.

Leipzig struck with an early goal when attacking midfielder Vanessa Fudalla’s speculative effort from range swerved and arced inches over goalkeeper Mala Grohs’ outstretched arms.

But Bayern pressure mounted, with near-misses at first before the Bavarians finally answered late in a rain-drenched half — Linda Dallman, cutting in from the right and firing a curler with her left, in what would prove to be just the first of a quickfire double. Deep into stoppage time, Georgia Stanway gave Bayern the lead it would not relinquish by pouncing in the midst of a post-corner scramble right in front of Leipzig keeper Elvira Herzog.

The second half showed that the visitors simply could not keep Bayern at bay. It was the Klara Bühl show to start, the Bayern winger getting onto the end of two flowing attacking moves, with Leipzig’s defense constantly cut to pieces. By the 70th minute, the score was 4-1, and then it was Bühl’s turn to turn provider by supplying a slick assist in the box for Lea Schüller.

Leipzig finally got one back after an untimely foul in the final quarter hour resulted in a penalty — tucked away successfully by earlier goal-scorer Fudalla — and a red card for Bayern defender Linda Sembrant.

But Bayern would get the last say again in the closing minutes, Sydney Lohmann driving through the middle of the pitch and sliding Schüller into acres of green. The Bayern striker went the rest of the way solo, adding another brace for the home side and finishing the scoring at 6-2.
