When Quinton de Kock, who played his 155th and last one-day international in the World Cup semi-final defeat to Australia in Kolkata on Thursday, began his white-ball career for South Africa, their major-tournament hoodoo was already brutally well established.

Almost 11 years since his 50-overs debut against New Zealand at Paarl in January 2013 – out for 18 while batting at No 6 in a one-wicket loss not dissimilar to this higher-stage clash for low-scoring tension -- that trend sadly hadn’t budged.
