Additional reactive protection modules for the combat readiness of ...
Koblenz, 19 December 2024 – The state-of-the-art reactive protection technology is an essential part of the protection for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle and its crew.
In order to ensure the Puma’s ability to withstand operations over a longer period of time, the Bundeswehr Procurement Office has today concluded a framework agreement that enables the procurement of a so-called operational stockpile of these reactive protection modules.
In terms of quantity, today’s firm order initially corresponds roughly to the equipment of a battalion. This will ensure that the armored infantry troops are best prepared for their deployment as part of the Lithuania Brigade, among other things.
The reactive armor is an add-on solution that is attached to the outside of the infantry fighting vehicle and contains explosives. As soon as a shaped charge hits it, the explosives are triggered and a plate is accelerated in the opposite direction of the shaped charge spike. This means that the effect of the shaped charge can be effectively countered with comparatively little weight. The modules also protect the crew from ballistic threats, but especially from handheld anti-tank weapons.
Delivery of the modules is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
