PSV Eindhoven Finances 2023/24
PSV Eindhoven celebrated their 110th anniversary in some style in 2023/24, as they won their 25th league title, while they also reached the last 16 of the Champions League and won the Johan Cruyff Shield, though they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the KNVB Cup by Feyenoord.
The club proudly noted that it had broken a number of records, securing the title with its highest ever points total, while registering its longest series of matches without defeat and longest series of consecutive wins.
It’s fair to say that the appointment of head coach Peter Bosz turned out to be good one, after the former manager of Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon took PSV back to the top of Dutch football. This was just one of the astute decisions taken by director of football, Earnie Stewart, who has also been important in the club’s renaissance.
This is the first time that PSV have won the Eredivisie since 2017/18, having finished as runners-up four times in the intervening five seasons.
The club said that the 2023/24 season was “not only a sporting success, but also a financial success”, as they managed to post a €13.2m pre-tax profit (€9.7m after tax), though this was a little lower than the previous year’s €17.5m.
This was driven by a huge new club record for revenue, which shot up €51.5m (51%) from €100.6m to €152.1m, though this was partly offset by profit from player sales halving from €61.1m to €31.3m.
Operating expenses also grew €26.8m (19%) from €142.7m to €169.5m, though net interest payable decreased from €1.4m to just €0.7m.
PSV’s revenue growth was on the back of doing well in Europe, which led to a steep increase in broadcasting income, as this more than doubled from €28.5m to €62.3m. However, there was also good growth in match day, up €9.0m (37%) from €24.7m to €33.7m, and commercial, up €8.6m (18%) from €47.5m to €56.1m.
However, PSV paid a price for their excellent sporting performance, as the wage bill rose €17.4m (29%) from €59.8m to €77.2m, due to higher bonuses, though player amortisation was only slightly higher at €25.7m. Other expenses also rose €8.3m (17%) from €48.4m to €56.7m, while they also booked €2.7m player impairment.
PSV have the third best profit reported to date for 2023/24 in the Eredivisie, with their €13.2m only surpassed by AZ €17.2m and Feyenoord €13.3m. In stark contrast, Ajax posted a large €12.9m loss.
