Stoke City have sacked manager Alex Neil.

The 42-year-old has been dismissed from his position after a run of six games without a win with four consecutive defeats in their last four games.

Club chairman John Coates said on Neil's departure: “Alex is a man of absolute integrity who has given his all for Stoke City, and we would like to thank him for his hard work during his time with the Club.

“We are grateful for the building blocks he has helped put in place in bringing together a group of players in whom we have a huge amount of faith regarding their ability to turn things around this season, and who can help us achieve longer-term success.

“However, with the way the results have been so far, we have made the difficult decision to seek a new direction for the team at this time.

“Nothing matters to me more than the success of our club and we are now working towards the appointment of Alex’s successor.”

Neil first took charge of the Championship club in August 2022 after leaving former side Sunderland.

He led Stoke to a 16th-place finish in the Championship last season, but this campaign his side have lost 11 times and are just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Stoke are next in action Swansea City on Tuesday.

Luis Suarez has said goodbye to Gremio fans amid news that Inter Miami are finalizing a deal to sign the striker to a one-year contract, as reported by The Athletic.

The 37-year-old spent the last year with the Brazilian side where his 24 goals and 17 assists in 52 appearances, helped guide the team to a second-placed finish in the Serie A.

However, after playing his final game for the club earlier this week, Suarez has now taken to social media to say goodbye to the club.

He said: "To all Brazilian football: Thank You! Thank you for the love, for looking beyond the shirt, for the respect in each stadium. Big hug!"

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Suarez will reunite with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who won four La Liga titles and a Champions League from 2014-2020.

Nothing is completely sorted on what designation Suarez will hit the cap at, sources say. The league will discuss potential roster rule changes this winter.

Miami, and all other teams in MLS, will have until roster compliance date to finalize designations on their roster. Roster compliance date is the Friday evening before opening weekend in MLS.

Leverkusen four points clear at top of Bundesliga after 1-1 draw

Bayer Leverkusen missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga by six points after being held to a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart.

Leverkusen, who are still undefeated in the league this season, fell behind in the 40th minute thanks to a goal from Chris Führich but equalised early in the second half through Florian Wirtz.

They are four points clear at the top of the league after Bayern Munich's surprise 5-1 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt yesterday.

Leverkusen are next in action against Molde in the Europa League on Thursday while Bayern take on Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday.

A closer look at Everton 2-0 Chelsea

Chelsea’s miserable record at Goodison Park took a turn for the worse as Mauricio Pochettino was condemned to successive defeats for the first time since he took charge by Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin’s second-half goals.

It was a fifth defeat in six seasons at Everton and to make matters worse they lost captain Reece James to yet another injury in the first half. Chelsea also lost goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to injury in the second half with Djordje Petrovic coming on.

West Ham lacked energy against Fulham - Moyes

David Moyes pointed to two tough away fixtures in the space of four days as a factor in West Ham's thrashing by Fulham on Sunday.

Moyes' side came from behind to beat Tottenham on Thursday but were a shadow of themselves at Craven Cottage as the hosts ran out deserved 5-0 winners.

"I think the carry over from the game, we used up too much energy in midweek," Moyes said afterwards. "We weren’t able to get ourselves back.

Another Thursday fixture, Fulham had a Wednesday fixture. No excuse for the result but it played a part in it."

Reflecting further Moyes was pragmatic and preferred to look at the team's week as a whole rather than this specific result.

"It is disappointing," he added. "But we’ve had two difficult away games this week, three points from the two games is not a bad return."

Manchester City came from a goal behind to overcome Luton Town and win 2-1.

The result ended a four-game winless streak. Luton took the lead when Elijah Adebayo rose high at the back post to head past Ederson just before the half-time break. It capped off a difficult first half for City.

But they responded well after the break. Bernardo Silva curled the ball home in the 62nd minute to put his side ahead. And then Jack Grealish slid in at the far post to strike and put City ahead.

Here, Sam Lee analyses the match.

Bayern’s Frankfurt thumping was an outlier – and bad news for Man United

The last time Bayern Munich lost 5-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt, just over four years ago, manager Niko Kovac was shunted out of the door the next day.

He had long lost the respect of the dressing room. Things are not at that terminal stage for Thomas Tuchel after Saturday’s debacle at Deutsche Bank Park. Far from it.

Their first defeat in the league shocked because it was such an outlier, an unforeseen collapse punctuating a series of consistent results — with the noted exception of the 2-1 cup exit at the hands of third division Saarbrucken five weeks ago — and because the lifeless performance that ran counter to accepted wisdom.

Here's why Bayern’s heavy defeat could mean bad news for Manchester United, who must beat the Germans to have a chance of progressing in the Champions League, on Tuesday.

Arsenal beat Chelsea in front of a new record crowd for a Women's Super League game.

A crowd of 59,042 supporters watched as a brace from Alessia Russo as well as goals from Beth Mead and Amanda Ilestedt earned the home side a 4-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, which moved them level on points with the defending champions at the top of the table.

Sunday's attendance beats the previous record of 54,115 set earlier this season against Liverpool.

Arsenal CEO, Vinai Venkatesham, said: “The support we’ve seen for our women’s team has been incredible, and is felt by everyone associated with our club.

“Breaking our own WSL attendance record is another landmark moment. We’re proud of our women’s team, our fantastic supporters, and our passionate people across our club – all of whom have contributed to this moment. The hard work that got us here will continue as we remain focused on nurturing the connection with our supporters.

“It’s been encouraging to see attendances and broadcast viewing figures grow this season across the WSL. We want to ensure that we drive this level of support consistently, season after season, as we continue to accelerate the sustainable growth of the women’s game.”

Arsenal also confirmed they have sold more than 25,000 tickets for their next WSL game at the Emirates, against Manchester United on February 17.

Guardiola confirms Haaland foot injury

Richard Heathcote/Getty Images

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Erling Haaland has suffered a foot injury that has forced him to miss Manchester City's Premier League match at Luton Town.

The Norway international — top scorer in the Premier League with 14 goals — is absent as the champions look to bounce back from four games without a win.

He had, until Sunday, started every league game for City so far this season.

Addressing Haaland's injury ahead of the game at Kenilworth Road, Guardiola said: "A bone stress reaction in his foot and after the last game he felt it. He cannot play.

Premier League table - Figure 17

"I don't know (the length of the injury). Week by week, day by day, we will see what happens.

"We play with 11 that's for sure. Erling has been so important since he's arrived that's for sure. But during the season we see this sort of thing. Injuries, suspensions, problems, we have to adapt.

"Julian Alvarez will be playing (as our centre forward)."

The sadness of Hodgson and a long career ending in disillusionment

Roy Hodgson wasn’t happy.

Crystal Palace had lost, 2-1 to Liverpool after leading for much of the second half, which was where it all stemmed from. But there was something more than that.

“If you want to describe my mood as ‘disillusioned’, you’ve probably chosen the right word,” Hodgson said when asked if that was the best way to sum up his state of mind after yesterday’s defeat. “Yes, I’m disillusioned.”

About the game generally, or just this game?

“This game really was pretty much what the game is these days.”

He is back to full fitness now, however, and has been given the nod at Goodison Park.

England international Sterling misses out after failing to score in his last two outings as do Nicolas Jackson and Levi Colwill.

Thiago Silva is also not part of the starting XI for the first time in the Premier League this season, but Conor Gallagher — suspended against Manchester United — returns.
